Tom Davis Just Doesn't Fucking Get It

Day 3 of the Tom Davis shitshow is upon us.

Since I last posted yesterday, Tom has continued to express his disbelief about how his "simple tweet" could cause such a stir.(Actually, Tom, it's several tweets, and they're just not that simple).

Judging from his timeline, he's "endured" a rather unpleasant experience since he told not 1 but 2 committed/signed high school basketball players where to play on Saturday, people have contacted his boss about having him fired, and he generally just doesn't understand what could be so wrong with sending a "tweet" to high school boys.

And I still don't know what to make of this guy. Is his lack of understanding related to the fact that his inappropriate messages were sent via Twitter? Because for some reason he feels the need to place quotation marks around the word "Tweet" every time he uses it. I can only assume he either doesn't feel what he says on his Twitter account should reflect on his professional reputation, or that he just doesn't think words should matter... this coming from a newsman.

Either way, it's pretty shocking that a sports editor at a respected newspaper in Indiana's 2nd largest city continues to miss the point about his suggesting on Twitter where Hartman & Crisman should play college basketball.

The fact is, I expect more from IU freshmen, no matter how drunken they are or how passionately they may feel about their beloved program, than to contact any recruits and tell them where to play ball.

For a man in Tom's position to do so- and to recommend the two particular schools in which he did (Butler, his alma mater & IPFW, his paper's hometown college team)- is beyond the pale. (btw- I'm sure Dane Fife loved being included in the Crisman message.)

But this guy just doesn't fucking seem to get it. He doesn't understand why people think it's wrong for a journalist to tell kids where they should attend college, regardless of the fact that: a) they've already decided, b) he's admitted they likely don't give a shit about what he says, c) his doing so presents significant professional conflicts, d) he used social media- an indelible message forum for all the world to see, and e) that the public generally tends to hold its media members to higher standards.

And while he may quip about his dog being killed if Colin Hartman ever decides to de-commit from IU, I would suggest to Tom that the greatest threat to his well-being at the moment is his own ignorance.

Because if Tom Davis doesn't get why people are holding him accountable for his actions, then there's no telling what other stupid shit he might do to endanger his own career.

Here's a suggestion for Tom: if you want to be a journalist, take off your fan hat, practice some professional ethics, and, most importantly, own up to your mistakes.

If you want to continue to say stupid shit without being held accountable for your words, quit pretending to be a newsman, find another job, and start your own blog under a pseudonym. You can tweet while intoxicated and say all the retarded stuff you want without people trying to get you fired.

After all, the latter works for this guy, right?

  1. You are slaying this guy. His initial remarks were dumb. His response to the controversy is utterly incompetent. Kudos, sir, for holding him accountable.

  2. I esp. love his smuggness in recent tweet about receiving "40 new followers" I wish he would be held accountable by his superiors, unfortunatly they will probably pat him on the back for stiring the pot and making their otherwise unknown paper known.

  3. I like how he talks about his followers showing him "love" since this thing started. He's received over 180 responses in the past day and a half, only 3 were supportive. The man is freaking delusional and should be suspended until he apologizes. Very unprofessional. Has the NS responded?

  4. Nobody at the News Sentinel has said anything about it, at least not on their website. Davis is doing a radio interview later today on WNUY. I'm curious if he talks about this.

  5. I live in Ohio. Don't really care about Butler or IU (although I did love all things Hoosiers growing up during the Knight/Alford era). But you need to get over this. As an outsider, all I can say is BFD. Is the guy dumb? Absolutely. Did it warrant a post from you? Certainly, and you did a good job with it.

But I wonder if you'd continue to write about this ordeal had Davis tweeted that a Butler kid should choose IU instead.

My take is that you might even write positively about such a Tweet. And while Davis may be a journalist, he is certainly allowed to have a voice. I agree that Twitter is not the place for that (a column saying he wished the kid would've gone to Butler would be better), but this is far from a crime against journalism.

He's a Butler fan, you're an Indiana fan. But you're both fans, and even as a journalist, he too is allowed (even encouraged) to be one. Sorry.

  6. To anonymous from Ohio - it's not a matter of being a fan, it's called the code journalistic ethics. As a journalist, you are supposed to be held to a high level of ethical practices than a common fan due to your notoriety and public presence. The only reason us in the IU fanbase has carried this on is that it's in relation to a player currently committed to playing for IU. Does that mean if Mr.Davis did this about a different player, it would be wrong? Hell no, we just might not care as much. Regardless of which team you follow, this situation is unethical and wrong since it comes from the sports editor from a newspaper.
